PassportCraftBot is the program PassportCraft uses to read a product page on a website. It reads a page only when a person asks PassportCraft to read that page. It does not follow links, and it does not crawl whole sites.
Why it reads a page
PassportCraft helps brands make digital product passports. A person can give PassportCraft the address of one product page. PassportCraftBot reads that page, so the person can use the product facts the page already states, such as the product's name, image and barcode. PassportCraftBot copies a product's image only when a person in the brand's own PassportCraft workspace asks to use it.
What it reads
For each address a person gives, PassportCraftBot reads:
- the site's robots.txt file;
- the product page at that address;
- for a shop on Shopify or WooCommerce, the shop's public product data for that one product.
On the page, it reads product data that is written for programs to read: schema.org data and Open Graph tags. It also keeps the page's title and the language the page declares. It does not run the page's scripts, and it does not submit forms.
How it behaves
- It identifies itself with this user agent:
PassportCraftBot/1.0 (+https://passportcraft.com/bot). - It obeys robots.txt. If robots.txt fails with a server error or does not answer, PassportCraftBot reads nothing from your site.
- It waits at least one second between requests to the same host name.
- PassportCraftBot reads your robots.txt file before it reads a page. If that file answers with status 401, 403, 429 or 503, or with a challenge page, PassportCraftBot sends no request to your site for 24 hours. It does the same if your site answers with status 429 while it reads the page.
- When a site answers a request for a product image with status 429, PassportCraftBot pauses its requests for images to that site for one hour. It does the same if that site's robots.txt file answers with status 401, 403, 429 or 503, or with a challenge page.
- If a robots.txt file redirects to another host name, PassportCraftBot follows the rules it finds there. A 401 or 403 answer from that other host does not start either pause. A 429 or 503 answer or a challenge page from that host pauses the site whose robots.txt file redirected.
- If a page answers with status 401, 403 or 503, or with a challenge page, PassportCraftBot does not read that page.
- When a product page redirects, PassportCraftBot follows it only to another address on the same domain.
How to block it
Add these lines to your robots.txt file:
User-agent: PassportCraftBot
Disallow: /
PassportCraftBot reads robots.txt again before each page, so the change applies to the next read.
Where requests come from
Requests come from our application servers in the European Union, in Ireland. Their IP addresses change, so a block by IP address may not hold. Use robots.txt instead.
