Three battery types need a passport from 18 February 2027: every light-means-of-transport battery whatever its capacity, every industrial battery above 2 kWh, and every electric-vehicle battery. The 2 kWh threshold applies only to industrial batteries: a 500 Wh e-bike pack is in scope. The duty attaches to batteries placed on the market or put into service from that date.

From 18 February 2027 each LMT battery, each industrial battery with a capacity greater than 2 kWh and each electric vehicle battery placed on the market or put into service shall have an electronic record (‘battery passport’).

Who has to create the battery passport?

Whoever places the battery on the EU market. Import finished battery products, and that is you, not your supplier. Sell them under your own name, and it is you too.

  • Importers

    You bring the battery into the EU market, so the passport is yours to publish, even though a manufacturer outside the EU made it.

  • Assemblers

    You build batteries into your products. If the battery reached the EU market through your supplier, the passport is your supplier's; if you import it, it is yours.

  • Distributors

    You resell batteries already on the EU market. The passport stays with whoever placed them there, unless you sell them under your own brand, which makes you the manufacturer.

  • Manufacturers

    You make the battery, or sell it under your brand. The passport is yours: one record per model, and a QR code on every pack you place on the market from 18 February 2027.

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, Article 77(4)

The economic operator placing the battery on the market shall ensure that the information in the battery passport is accurate, complete and up to date. It may give written authorisation to any other operator to act on its behalf.

An importer or distributor shall be considered a manufacturer for the purposes of this Regulation and shall be subject to the obligations of a manufacturer under Article 38, where any of the following applies: (a) a battery is placed on the market or put into service under that importer’s or distributor’s own name or trademark; (b) a battery already placed on the market or put into service is modified by that importer or distributor in such a way that compliance with the relevant requirements of this Regulation could be affected; or (c) the purpose of a battery already placed on the market or put into service is modified by that importer or distributor.

Which batteries need a passport?

Three battery types need a passport from 18 February 2027: every light-means-of-transport battery whatever its capacity, every industrial battery above 2 kWh, and every electric-vehicle battery. What has to be in it?

PassportCraft organizes battery information into product identity, manufacturer details, materials, performance, sustainability and supporting documents. Required fields depend on the battery type. The editor shows what is missing before you publish, including a valid GTIN. Field checks help you prepare the record; responsibility for the data stays with you.

Which values do I already have?

Start with your product records: the model identifier, manufacturing details and declaration of conformity. Then gather technical specifications from your suppliers, such as chemistry, capacity and voltage. Availability varies by battery and supplier. PassportCraft helps you see which information is still missing before you publish.

What does it cost?

Start free with 3 models and up to 5 packs per model: no card, no expiry. Paid plans start at €29 a month, with 50 models and up to 500 serial numbers per model.

What happens if I cancel?

A published PassportCraft battery passport stays online after your plan ends. Cancelling moves your account to the Free plan: you keep editing, exporting and, if you choose, taking the page down, and you cannot publish new passports, add serial numbers above the free allowance, add languages or use live API keys. No charge keeps a page up.

What happens if PassportCraft closes?

If PassportCraft decided to discontinue the service, you would have at least 90 days' notice and your full export throughout. The addresses in your QR codes would stop resolving at the end of that period. PassportCraft does not yet offer a backup host that keeps them resolving; your export and a reprint plan are your continuity.

Are you connected to the EU registry?

The EU DPP Registry opened for operator enrolment on 20 July 2026, and the Commission's own operator guide says battery passports cannot be registered in it yet. Under Article 77(10) the economic operator uploads the passport's unique identifier. PassportCraft gives you the identifier and the passport address to file when the registry accepts them.

Can my recycler get the restricted data?

PassportCraft separates the passport into the three access levels the Regulation names: public (78 fields), authorities (2) and legitimate interest (13), and keeps the restricted values off the public page. Nobody outside can read them yet: the Article 77(9) act naming persons with a legitimate interest has not been adopted, and access for authorities is not built yet.
