Suggest care symbols from your care text
Last updated June 12, 2026
Where it appears
Care information lives in the Materials & care chapter of a Textile / Apparel passport, in two fields: a care symbol picker and a free-text care instructions field. The Suggest care symbols button appears under the free-text field as soon as it contains text. General Product passports don't have care fields, so the assist is textile-only — the category differences are covered in The passport editor.
This is the assist's whole purpose: you usually already have care instructions as a sentence ("Machine wash at 30 degrees, do not tumble dry, iron low") from a tech pack or supplier sheet, and the symbol picker wants discrete standard symbols. The suggester does the mapping.
What it suggests
Suggestions come exclusively from PassportCraft's fixed catalog of ISO 3758 care symbols — the international standard behind the symbols on sewn-in care labels — covering five categories: washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, and professional care. The dialog states the boundary itself: "AI-suggested from your care text and limited to standard ISO 3758 symbols. Review before applying."
The output is constrained on the way through:
- Only catalog symbols survive — anything else the model says is discarded.
- Washing, bleaching, drying, and ironing each get at most one symbol, matching how care labels work; professional care can carry more than one.
- Aspects your text doesn't mention are never guessed at. "Machine wash 30°C" alone won't invent a drying symbol.
- Symbols you'd already picked in categories the text doesn't cover are kept, so a partial care text doesn't erase unrelated selections.
Review and apply
- Write or paste your care instructions into the free-text field.
- Click Suggest care symbols. The dialog "Suggested care symbols" opens and reads your text.
- Review the proposed symbols, shown as a list of named chips. The note under them spells out the consequence: "Applying sets your care symbols to the list above."
- Click Apply these symbols to set your care symbol selection to that list — or close the dialog to change nothing.
If nothing in your text maps to a standard symbol, the dialog says so: "No standard care symbols matched your text. Add more detail, or pick symbols manually." Specific, conventional phrasing ("do not bleach", "tumble dry low", "iron at medium temperature") maps better than vague phrasing ("treat gently").
As with every assist in the editor, the AI suggests and you decide — nothing is applied without you, and the applied selection is yours to stand behind like any other field, as covered in Completeness and validation.
Usage allowance
AI suggestions are metered per organization, not per user. All AI assists share a single allowance of 100 generations in any rolling 24-hour window — the green claim rewriter and the care symbol suggester draw from the same pool. Each generation counts the moment it runs, whether or not you apply the result: opening the dialog generates one suggestion, and Try again generates another. When the allowance is used up, requests fail — the dialog shows "Couldn't suggest symbols. Please try again." — and start succeeding again as earlier generations fall outside the 24-hour window.
Generating suggestions requires the editor role or higher.
Check the suggestion against your supplier's care label
The suggester maps what your text says — it can't know what your fabric can actually withstand. Before publishing, confirm the symbols match the care label your supplier or testing house specified, especially the wash temperature.
Frequently asked questions
Can the AI suggest a symbol that isn't a real care symbol?
No. Suggestions are hard-limited to PassportCraft's fixed catalog of standard ISO 3758 symbols — anything outside it is discarded before you see it, and the same validation would reject a non-standard symbol at field level anyway.
Will applying suggestions wipe the symbols I already picked?
Symbols in categories your care text doesn't mention are preserved and included in the suggested list. Where the text does cover a category — washing, bleaching, drying, or ironing — the suggestion replaces your previous pick for that category. The dialog shows the exact final list before you apply.
Why don't I see the Suggest care symbols button?
It appears only under the free-text care instructions field of a Textile / Apparel passport, and only once you've written some text there. General Product passports have no care fields, so the assist doesn't exist for them.
